Lucas Ebbeke was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a young man, he began work as an apprentice jeweller with his uncle, and his attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship quickly combined to create an exceptional talent for hand-crafting fine jewellery.
Lucas was soon working for some of Argentina’s premier jewellers and jewellery manufacturers, including Angelus (for Tiffany & Co. New York) and Orafi S.A. in Buenos Aires.
While working as a jeweller Lucas studied foreign trade at the University of Belgrano, receiving a Bachelor’s degree and Postgraduate Diploma in International Trade between 2002 and 2004.
By this time Lucas was running his own company, which was producing and exporting one-off bespoke jewellery to North America and Europe.
OVER THREE DECADES OF PRECISION JEWELLERY MANUFACTURING
During this time he also worked with Gregory Jewellers in Australia, and visited and fell in love with New Zealand.
After five successful years, the Argentinian government applied heavy restrictions to imports and exports in Argentina as a response to the country’s economic crisis. Lucas decided that the time was right, and moved to New Zealand permanently in 2008 in search of new opportunities. He worked as Master Jeweller and Workshop Manager at Jewellers Workshop in Auckland for 6 years.
After winning the New Zealand Fine Jewellery Awards in 2011 and gaining experience in the demanding New Zealand jewellery market, Lucas once again decided to create his own workshop and jewellery design studio, combining 36 years of experience as a jeweller with a passion for design and creativity.
As a result Ebbeke & Co. Jewellers was launched at 7 Hurstmere Road, Takapuna in July 2014.
Winner of the New Zealand Fine Jewellery Awards
“Primavera”, by Lucas Ebbeke, is the 2011 winning entry in the NZ Jewellery Awards Fine Jewellery category.
“Primavera” – Spanish for spring – is inspired by spring- time, when everything is blossoming.
Lucas combined his love of antique jewellery and craftsmanship by creating a hidden mechanism, allowing the top of the ring to detach and be worn as a pendant.
“In the fine category Lucas Ebbeke from Auckland stole the show with his flower ring titled ‘Primavera’ (Spanish for Spring) which transforms at the flick of a hidden mechanism into a pendant studded with almost $30,000 worth of sapphires and diamonds”.
“Judges were simply dazzled by Lucas’ ring made with platinum, 18ct pink gold, white and yellow diamonds, and Ceylonese sapphires”.“ The design, finish and technical skills involved in the piece were some of the best we have seen. He is surely a Master Jeweller.”
